Opportunity to Read is located at 275 Main Street, Watsonville, CA 95076. Opportunity to Read provides free basic literacy instruction, guidance and support to adults in the Watsonville area, enabling them to reach their goals and realize their personal potential in all areas of their lives.
Tutoring is provided primarily through one-on-one tutoring, however, the program also offers conversation groups, book discussion groups, a basic grammar class and a focus group. This is a great way for learners to gain more confidence and build their literacy skills for everyday life. The programs purpose is to help each individual learner achieve their personal goals.
Learner Requirements:
-learners must be 16 years of age or older
-learners must speak and understand enough English to go through the intake process
-learners must follow the Responsibilities Agreement
Volunteer tutors are trained and supported as they work with adults who seek to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Pairs (one-on-one tutor/learner matches) meet at the Literacy Center, Library or other mutually convenient location. Tutoring sessions often incorporate real-life materials from the learners work, home or personal lives.
Opportunity to Read - learner Centered Philosophy: Learners are equal partners; lesson plans are to serve learner goals, interests and needs; and learners have an important voice in the planning and delivery of services.
